Last spring Francis shocked a lot of people when he resigned from pastoring his church to pursue what God was laying on the heart of his family. Part of that plan was to engage more in what was happening in the church around the world. This past fall Francis spent months traveling with his family throughout several countries in Asia.

Now that he’s back in America we asked him what he learned on his travels …

Pete Briscoe was our first speaker at the 2010 RightNow Conference. When you are putting on a conference the most nerve-racking moment is at the start of the conference … you feel like those first few moments will set the tone for the whole event.

Pete is the pastor at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship where my parents are members. I trusted that Pete could kick-off the RightNow Conference with a bang, but you never know … we all have our off days.

Thankfully Pete nailed it. He did an outstanding job highlighting from Ephesians 3 the way that Paul was a TRADER. It was a challenging message and an awesome way to begin the conference. Here’s a short excerpt from that message:

Pete’s message is part of the RightNow: Lead Beyond Our Walls kit for church leaders.

Larry has been pastor there for over 30 years and has great insights in what it takes to faithfully lead the church.

Here’s a short excerpt from his time at The RightNow Conference where he talks about getting people in the church to serve because of “the Bono factor.”

When you enjoy launching new things there’s a temptation to jump to the next project before completing the one you are on.

RightNow has been focused for months on launching a brand new project called RightNowTraining.org. We are very excited about the potential this has to serve churches as they seek to make their small groups effective at discipling people.

But in the midst of launching this RightNowTraining.org project there are a few new potential projects surfacing. That’s where I have realized the value of our board of directors. This group is willing to trade in their time and experiences to give counsel to our young leadership team.

On the phone with one of our board members this week, Sean said “you can’t push a rope.”

He encouraged us to keep focusing on the big project in front of us and not to force any additional things. He reminded me that if God wants us to work on a new project then he will bring together the people and resources necessary. But until then we should make sure we are giving the appropriate energy to the project God already has given us.

Matt Carter recently challenged a room full of pastors at The RightNow Conference, “Why is the Christianity I read about it Acts so radically different than the Christianity I see here in America?”

Matt is the Lead Pastor at The Austin Stone Community Church. Last fall I was in Austin to meet with Todd Engstrom who is the pastor of Missional Communities This church is paving the way for a new way to do church. They are a mega church … but aren’t convinced that they have been as effective as they could in making disciples and sending them out into the community. The Austin Stone is modeling for other churches the transition from ”small groups” to “missional communities.”

Here’s a short video where Matt highlights the old versus new way of doing church.
