From Annoying to Admiration — My Experience with Shaun King (The Facebook Pastor)

Somehow through the course of my Facebook and Twitter life I became friends with this guy named Shaun.  I had never met Shaun and didn’t even now who he was.

Soon I regretted becoming “friends” with him.  I was amazed by how many updates he would send out in a single day.  He was always asking people for tents or clothes or toys to donate for some special cause.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of doing something to serve others … but this seemed annoying.

About this same time our Bluefish TV team began working on a Bible study project with Max Lucado based on his new book Outlive Your Life.  Max makes a very strong point in his teaching that we are equipped with technology to make a difference in the world in a nanosecond. We started hunting for great stories that would illustrate some of Max’s teaching. Shaun was the first guy that came to mind.  Who better to illustrate the power of technology than I guy I had only “met” online through Facebook and Twitter as he mobilized people to serve.

I learned more about Shaun and discovered he was pastor of a young church called Courageous Church.  What was once annoying quickly turned to admiration. I was so inspired by his story and by what God was doing through a small band of obedient followers in Atlanta.  We tried our best to capture Shaun’s powerful story in this short video below.

And by the way, follow Shaun and be inspired.  Plus check out an initiative that has sent over $1.5 million in tents to Haiti this year — A Home in Haiti.

    Brian,

Thank you for featuring Shaun on your blog. I’ve watched what Shaun and his passion have accomplished for the people of Haiti since January 12, 2010. The world needs more Shaun Kings. Since this video was published the number of tents provided by http://www.ahomeinhaiti.org has surpassed the number distributed by the American Red Cross and he is now raising money to build a new orphanage for disabled children in Haiti. The construction has already started and fundraising is ongoing for this project. I have no doubt that he will reach his goal. For those who aspire to help others, Shaun is an absolutely magnificent example to follow. I feel privileged to “know” Shaun and hope to actually meet him one day.

Brian, I’ve been following Shaun on Twitter and Facebook for about 2 years. I have met him and greatly admire his tenacity and drive for his passions and causes that he believes in. I am a family caregiver and don’t have a lot of time to work away from home but I made time to work on his HopeATL (Atlanta Floods) project.

Yes, his endless tweets can be annoying but you can’t deny his passion, and he does get things done.

BTW, he spoke to the leaders at my church about the value of social networking.

Brian. I can totally sympathize with you on this one. I had been following Shaun for about a year until I met him in person. We finally met in a small airport in Port Au Prince last month en route to Northwest Haiti. I joined him and others across the country to serve in Haiti.

Shauns’ pastorate at Courageous Church besets him “Courageous”. Yes Lord, he can be annoying on screen and in person but you can not deny his passion for purpose. I have learned that you don’t have to always agree with a person to get a job done or a project completed. I was one of the people whom went with him to Haiti and will return later this year to further continue our work there. Shaun is doing and practicing what many just talk about a “rubber glove” theology. He doesn’t just talk about it. He is doing exactly what he is talking about. I am excited and honored to be partnered with him, his family at Courageous Church and aHomeInHaiti.org. If there is a canonical recorded usage of a donkey to do God’s will and work clearly we can now use the internet to accomplish the same if not more.

I saw a random tweet which led me to Shaun’s site. I was amazed and empowered by his testimony and fervor for God, others, his family, and life on general. We def need more people like him in this world. He tweets a lot but by the end of the day I have learned something from him that I didn’t know before.
